Application Procedure for Studying in Singapore

Eligibility: For Indian students:

  • After Class 10 or 12: Eligible for polytechnic courses.
  • After Class 12: Eligible to apply for undergraduate programs at local universities.

Admission Criteria:

  • Admission to undergraduate programs is based on the specific entry requirements of each program. Entry into Singapore public institutes is generally competitive and requires high academic standards.
  • International students can also opt for private educational organizations (PEOs), which offer a range of courses from Certificate to Postgraduate levels. PEOs manage their own admissions processes. Applicants should directly check with the PEOs or seek guidance from certified Singapore education specialists for specific application procedures.

Intakes:

  • Government Universities: Main intake in August; some courses may also have a February intake.
  • Polytechnics: Intakes in April and September.
  • Private Educational Organizations: Multiple intakes throughout the year (January, February, July, August, September, October, etc.).

Study in Singapore Private Institutes:

Graduate Degrees: Public universities in Singapore offer three main types of graduate programs: Doctoral (Ph.D.), Master’s, and Graduate Diplomas.

Doctoral Programs: Doctoral programs are primarily research-based and typically take three to five years to complete. Students can apply for Ph.D. programs after completing a master’s degree. Admission requirements include a research proposal and scores from exams like GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, or IELTS.

Master’s Programs: Master’s programs are designed to prepare students for professional practice. The duration ranges from one to two years, depending on the university. Master’s degrees offered include MA, MS, MBA, MFA, etc. Generally, applicants must have a good bachelor’s degree and at least two years of work experience. Non-native English speakers or those whose bachelor’s degree was not taught in English need a good TOEFL or IELTS score. Applicants for engineering, computer science, or science programs are encouraged to have good GRE scores, while those applying for business-related courses should have GRE or GMAT scores.

Graduate Diploma: This is a terminal qualification providing professional training in specific areas. It is a one-year full-time program favored by students seeking additional expertise in a particular field.

Diplomas in Government Polytechnics in Singapore: Polytechnic education is a popular option for students interested in practice-oriented studies at the diploma level. Visa Process for Studying in Singapore

International students planning to study in Singapore must obtain a Student Pass, which can be acquired through the Singapore consulate. This requires evidence of confirmed enrollment in an academic program and proof of sufficient funds to support the student throughout their education. The visa process is typically handled by the educational institutions themselves.

Processing Time: The standard processing time for a new Student Pass application is approximately four weeks, or two weeks for institutions with EduTrust (PEO) status. However, some applications may take longer. The local sponsor and educational institution will be notified of the application's outcome by mail.

Requirements for Living and Working in Singapore: To live and work in Singapore, foreign nationals must have either a work permit or an employment pass.

Types of Student Visas:

  1. Student Pass: In Singapore, visas are referred to as "Passes" (e.g., Student Pass, Employment Pass, Social Visit Pass).
    • Application Timing: New applications for a Student Pass must be submitted at least one month before the course starts but not more than two months prior.
    • Application Process: Applications must be submitted via the official registration system known as the Student Pass On-Line Application & Registration (SOLAR) system.
    • Eligibility: All international students, except those with an Immigration Exemption Order, must apply for a Student Pass if they intend to pursue full-time studies at Singapore’s Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL).
